| Cooperative Home Care Associates |
Cooperative Home Care Associates (CHCA), one of
the most successful recruitment, training, and employment agencies
in home health care, seeks innovative solutions to the dramatic shortage
of paraprofessional health care workers. To facilitate this, CHCA
utilized the consulting services of Paraprofessional Healthcare Institute
(PHI), a nationally recognized industry leader. Together, they created
a new position to relieve the burden on registered nurses.
The new position, called a peer mentor, involved retraining paraprofessional
direct home health care workers to make the home visits previously
made by nurses. The new approach is effective, cost efficient, and
reduces some of the burden on nurses, while providing opportunities
for career advancement among lower-income individuals in the profession.
Additionally, PHI helped CHCA create a business proposal to seek funding
from the New York legislature.
PHI is now helping to develop criteria for the peer mentor post and
screening individuals for the new positions. The PHI trainers have
also helped Cooperative Home Care Associates teach supervisors to
use coaching skills and have thereby expanded the career development
opportunities for several hundred paraprofessional health aides.
