Community partnerships are good for community and good for business. The Pfizer facility in New London creates good will, strengthens Pfizer’s image, reinforces employee morale and improves our relations with policy makers. The latter is an advantage in a highly regulated industry and leads to a healthier, stronger business environment.

Pfizer
In June 2001, Pfizer, the global pharmaceutical giant, opened a $294 million headquarters for worldwide research and development operations on an abandoned 22-acre brownfield site in the port town of New London, CT. The building serves as headquarters for the world’s largest private biomedical research operation. 2,000 scientists, statisticians, executives and other professionals work in the 750,000 square foot-facility.

During the planning stages of the facility, Pfizer looked at more than 250 sites in the northeastern United States. In searching for the site, Pfizer benefited from a strategic relationship with the New London Development Corporation (NLDC), which attracted state and federal financing for the revitalization effort.

The NLDC hopes to use the Pfizer facility as a catalyst for the development of the riverfront in New London. Plans include a hotel, a fitness center, a medical services clinic, and 80 waterfront residential units with a riverfront esplanade.

NLDC is also developing a biotechnology research cluster that will accommodate emerging companies that conduct research in concert with Pfizer. The Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) has published a series of research papers on a variety of industry clusters in the Connecticut area including Connecticut Inner City Business Strategy (2000).
