| Our partnership with SJI is a win for the company
and the community. We tell them what skills we need in our employees,
and they provide trained candidates. |

The quality of entry-level applicants for clerical
positions is a challenge for many businesses. Seattle-based health
plan, Regence
BlueShield, found a new source of qualified trained applicants
through the Seattle Jobs Initiative’s intern program for disadvantaged
populations. By querying Regence BlueShield for the specific skills
they require (e.g., processing soft claims and customer relations
skills), SJI is able to screen and train the interns in response to
the employer’s needs. In addition to finding SJI interns better
skilled and better prepared for the workplace than candidates from
other sources, Regence BlueShield is offered the additional opportunity
to work with the interns on a temporary basis before hiring them.
To date, Blue Shield has hired 25% of the interns as regular full-time
workers.
The Aspen Institute
has documented the success of industry-specific workforce development
programs for employees nationally with its report, Gaining
Ground: The Labor Market Progress of Participants of Sectoral Employment
Development Programs.
