Home Depot
The worlds largest home improvement retailer and the second largest retailer in the United States, Home Depot is looking to an unusual partner – the Department of Labor— to help provide the 40,000 workers they expect to hire in the coming year and the 150,000 employees they anticipate needing in the next four years. The company is currently opening a new store every 43 hours and will open 200 new stores in 2002.

The Department of Labor’s National Business Partnership program provides service to unemployed or dislocated workers seeking jobs and serves the needs of businesses. "This is a win-win situation, a tremendous opportunity for so many dislocated workers," according to Labor Secretary Elaine Chao. The Department of Labor recruits, screens, and refers applicants preparing to join Home Depot.

Home Depot will consider the applicants for various positions at new and existing stores including lot attendants, sales associates, and supervisors. Home Depot generally prices its starting pay at rates between five and 15 percent over the local community pay market for retail.

The announcement of the partnership came on June 5, 2002 and investors responded to the announcement with Home Depot shares closing at 1.1% higher than they had at the start of the day.
