| Monterey Mushrooms |
When the country’s largest distributor of
fresh and processed mushroom products adopted a new vision to "be
the best" in the industry at delivering long-term value to their
customers, employees, shareholders, investors and the communities
in which they operate, executives knew they had to get all of their
employees to buy into this vision. Monterey Mushrooms management understood
that the principles had to be adopted by both their unionized (United
Farm Workers) and non-unionized workforce.
So Monterey Mushrooms turned to FIELD (Farmworker Institute for Education
and Leadership Development), a nonprofit organization, to help break
down the barriers between management and the unionized workforce and
to develop training programs that would encourage workers to be the
best for themselves and for the company.
Founded by Cesar Chavez and the farmworkers’ movement, FIELD’s
mission is to promote the economic and social prosperity of Latinos
and other low-income/low-skilled workers and their families—helping
them realize their inherent self-worth and strengthen their families.
With many years of experience in developing customized training for
employers and incumbent workers, FIELD designed employee training
for Monterey Mushrooms that reinforced its "be the best"
principles, encouraged collaboration, and fostered conflict resolution.
Monterey Mushrooms and FIELD are now collaborating on the development
and implementation of safety training.
From the company’s perspective, the rewards have been concrete:
higher productivity, fewer accidents, and subsequently a significant
drop in Workers’ Compensation costs, a major expense in California
where Monterey operates several facilities.
FIELD is just one example of industry-specific workforce development
programs operating in over 20 different industries. The National Network
of Sector Partners (NNSP) provides information about the success of
industry-specific training for employers and employees nationally.
