| Kirby Co. |
Kirby Co., one of the nation’s largest vacuum
cleaner companies, sought to develop first-line supervisors from within
its ranks of entry-level workers. With today’s pressures on
time and resources, on-the-job training can often be an expensive
proposition. Enter WIRE-Net, a Cleveland-based manufacturing consortium
specializing in employer-based training and consulting. WIRE-Net made
the needed training session cost-efficient for Kirby Co. by recruiting
participants from other companies to defray costs and simultaneously
ensured high-quality training by conducting it at the Kirby facility
on their own equipment. More than twenty Kirby employees completed
the training program, with management citing increased ownership and
pride in their work from those who participated.
Many local manufacturing associations can provide industry-specific
workforce development training. The
Center for Workforce Success at the National Association of Manufacturing
is an excellent resource for such programs. The
Aspen Institute has documented the success of industry-specific
workforce development programs for employees nationally with its report,
Gaining
Ground: The Labor Market Progress of Participants of Sectoral Employment
Development Programs.
