General Electric
Company (GE) provides aircraft engines, power generation, water
processing, security technology, medical imaging, business and consumer
financing, media content, and advanced materials to customers in more
than 100 countries. The company employs some 300,000 people worldwide.
In Cincinnati, GE’s jet engine manufacturing plant employs 1,600
hourly wage workers. In 2005, GE recognized it would need to tap additional
resources for hiring although it had not looked to outside sources
to hire workers in nearly 20 years. A previous experiment with the
public workforce system provided some support but left the company
feeling that the “civil service” approach was not suitable
for its needs.
GE executives changed their minds when a representative from the Super
Jobs Center met with company leadership to discuss their needs
and visited the plant several times to learn about the specific skills
needed for entry-level and skilled trades employees. Super Jobs representatives
pride themselves on being experts in industry-specific workforce needs
and responsive to the challenges of individual businesses. The Super
Jobs Center was once the Cincinnati
USA Regional Chamber of Commerce’s own successful job placement
service. Reorganized, although still housed within the Chamber’s
offices, the Southwest Ohio Region Workforce Investment Board has
assumed management of the Center.
Super Jobs staff member, Sheila Roth posted the open positions on
the Ohio job matching system, logged over 3,500 resumes for GE, did
an initial screening of applicants, and categorized resumes according
to the type of job available. Even walk-in job applicants at GE are
redirected to the Super Jobs Center.
In the last half of 2005, GE’s staffing team hired over 120
individuals which would not have been possible without the support
provided from the Super Jobs Center.
