| Allstate Insurance Company |
With nearly 40,000 employees spread across the
United States, Allstate
Insurance Company faces a broad challenge: how to deliver quality
training and education in a cost effective manner to all of its employees.
According to Chairman, President and CEO of Allstate, Edward M. Liddy,
"The insurance business is a knowledge business. We don’t
have a product you buy off the shelf – our people are our product,
so they need to be the best they can be."
Central to addressing this need is ensuring employees at all levels
of the organization have equal access to education. Because of the
diverse nature of its workforce, Allstate leverages a number of methods
to achieve this goal. In addition to the extensive use of technology
to deliver internal training and education to thousands of learners
across the country, Allstate extensively pursues alliances with educational
institutions.
Allstate has established alliances with several local universities
in the greater Chicagoland area, all of which offer degree granting
programs onsite at Allstate’s Northbrook, Illinois headquarters.
These programs increase access to education for Allstate’s employees,
many of whom would otherwise face time and travel conflicts in accessing
higher education opportunities.
Recently, Allstate extended the reach of its higher education programs
by offering access to online undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
This initiative has been well received by employees across the corporation
who can now take advantage of the convenience of online college degree
programs.
"When choosing our educational partners, we consider a variety
of elements depending on the business need," says Marcie Molek,
Director of Enterprise Education. "We will only consider partnering
with colleges or universities that offer regional accreditation, and
we consider the quality of education delivered, the experience and
capacity of the institution, the caliber of instructors/professors,
the quality of student support, their ability to customize curriculum,
and their administrative ease, cost and class size."
In addition, Allstate offers all employees the maximum amount of tuition
assistance allowable without employee taxation - $5,250 - to individuals
pursuing 4-year or undergraduate degrees, and pays 100% of costs for
employees who wish to acquire an Associates Degree.
Because of its commitment to expanding access to education for all
employees, the non-profit Council
for Adult and Experiential Learning recognized Allstate in 2001
through its WorkforceChicago2.0 initiative for its commitment to incorporating
best practices in workforce development. The Workforce2.0 framework
is based on exemplary practices in workforce development exhibited
by leading companies such as Bank One, TruServ, Motorola, Northern
Trust, and the University of Chicago Hospitals.
