Initiative for
a Competitive Inner City (ICIC)
is a leading source of vital business data and economic analysis
demonstrating the market potential in America’s inner
cities. Founded in 1994 by Harvard Business School Professor
Michael Porter, ICIC focuses on the vast market opportunities
of inner cities in its effort to create jobs and income for
urban residents.
In conjunction with founding partners, PricewaterhouseCoopers
and the Boston Consulting Group, ICIC has produced a new and
highly sophisticated approach to analyzing the economic potential
of inner cities. In addition, ICIC engages private-sector
resources to identify market opportunities and work with individual
inner-city businesses.
ICIC partners with Inc magazine to produce an annual ranking
of America’s fastest growing companies located in inner
cities. In 2002, 4,200 companies were nominated, representing
an increase of more than 100 percent over the previous year.
Inc magazine profiles the companies annually, showcasing how
these firms are realizing the vast market potential of the
inner city. To learn more, visit www.innercity100.org.
ICIC’s research and analysis on Inner City Competitiveness
Strategies, Anchor Institutions, Best Practices, Information Technology,
Public Sector and Inner City Businesses, Retailing, and Workforce
is documented in over 30 publications available online.
