For more than 100 years, Sears,
Roebuck and Co. has helped American home owners outfit and maintain
their homes and families. In response to a 2002 U.S. Department of
Housing and Urban Development (HUD) study that revealed a growing
home-ownership gap -- the minority home ownership rate is 18 percent
lower than the national average -- Sears has created the Sears
American Dream Campaign. This $100 million community commitment
will help millions of Americans break down the barriers to purchasing
houses and provide products and services that outfit and maintain
homes and families through education programs, contributions, hands-on
help and advocacy.
"We created the Sears American Dream Campaign because we believe
that everyone has a right to share in the American dream of home ownership
and be able to preserve what they own," said Chairman and Chief
Executive Officer Alan J. Lacy. "Our program will help people
purchase a house and remain home owners by providing support for their
homes and families."
As its first national not-for-profit partner, Sears selected the NeighborWorks®
Network of local nonprofit organizations dedicated to assisting
families purchase, improve, and maintain their homes. Through this
partnership, Sears created the $1 million Sears American Dream Campaign
fund to help provide down payment and closing cost assistance to homeowners.
In addition, Sears is the first national retail sponsor of 75 NeighborWorks
HomeOwnership CentersSM across the country. Sears’ support will
help these Centers to offer a wide range of educational services,
products and training necessary to purchase, renovate, maintain and
manage a home.
"Research shows lack of information and access to resources are
the greatest barriers to home ownership and maintenance," says
Alan J. Lacy, Chairman and CEO of Sears. "Through the sponsorship
of these HomeOwnership Centers, we are taking immediate steps towards
breaking down those barriers."
In the campaign’s first year, Sears expects to impact neighborhoods
in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York,
Oakland, Phoenix and Philadelphia.
